Saw It On Social: Mother Science Hero Serum

Nov 24, 2025

Last year, I started accepting gifted product. This was a big change after 16 years of living without freebies. But I’ve tried to be diligent about which products I accept as gifts and which I continue to pay for because I just don’t need that much stuff (esp. when I have to pay tax on all of it). So when Mother Science offered to gift me their Hero Serum last spring, I turned them down because I’d never heard of the brand and the serum I was using at the time suited me fine.

Fast Forward to summer 2025, when I noticed a dramatic shift in my skin for no discernible reason. Yeah, I know, everything is Perimenopause, but this was like a freight train hit me.  My skin looked duller, felt drier, and my makeup would not stay on, even with primer and finishing spray.

I had a facial. No change.

I did micro-needling. Things looked better for two weeks, and then, sallow city again. I was at a loss.

My aesthetician recommended that I change serums, but I hated the one she recommended. A friend recommended another one, no dice. I went back to two different old favorites for a few weeks each, no change.

I started taking a different multi-vitamin. No change.

I started sleeping more hours each night. No change.

I broke out my 30oz Stanley and my True Lime packets. Could I drink enough water to revive my ever more lifeless looking skin? I could not.

One night, I went out to dinner with my husband, applied a full face of makeup at 4:00PM, set it with spray, and by 8:00PM, looked like I was only wearing mascara and eyeliner. WHAT THE HELL was happening to my skin? Was this some kind of rapid aging syndrome?

As a woman who was a teenager in the toxicity of the 1990s, an incredible amount of my self-worth is tied to my appearance. This sudden shift left me feeling like I was turning into the old crone from Snow White. I say with this complete honesty: One morning, I applied my makeup, looked at myself in the mirror, and actually thought, “I guess I’m just never going to feel pretty ever again.” Rational thought had clearly exited stage left.

Then, scrolling Instagram, I saw TIBAL rave about the Mother Science Hero Serum. Now, I had to try it. I also bought the Barrier Repair Moisturizer, because I’m a sucker for a bundled product. Even if it was terrible, I would get a Saw It on Social out of it. There was nothing to lose.

Mother Science’s website talks about how the company is “revolutionizing skincare through biotech.” The product is also made without sulfates, parabens, etc. Mother Science also talks about how Malessezin, an ingredient they developed, is a brightening “revolution” that also helps with pigmentation issues. But I’m not a chemist or a product developer, so I’m not qualified to speak to those claims. Here’s what I do know:

After just three weeks, I noticed an incredible turn around in my skin.  It was brighter, more radiant, and more alive looking. Now, after two months, it continues to improve. Also, my makeup no longer fades by lunch.

At 43, I’m now at an age where I’m considering more serious skin interventions to repair past damage. But I was so morose when I thought I had reached a spot where no over-the-counter product could help my skin. To find this serum, when I thought only four-figure dermatology solutions could help, was a gift. I’m still considering stronger interventions (a peel maybe or a laser treatment, we’ll see) but I feel like Mother Science bought me some more time.

I cannot overstate the confidence boost these products gave me by breathing a bit of life into my skin. If you want to try them, they are 30% off this week for Black Friday. I think the <$100 price point for the Hero Serum is extremely fair, because I have paid so much more for so much less, so to pick up the serum for an additional discount is great. I highly recommend. 10/10. Will shop here again.

{As explained above, Mother Science offered me a freebie previously, which I turned down. I bought the Hero Serum and Barrier Repair Bundle with my own dollars. When Mother Science reached out with a gift again earlier this month, I accepted it, and plan to give away the set to a reader as part of some Christmas giveaways that I’m planning for December, so look for it there.}

Your honest disclosures are refreshing. Accepting gifted product while being clear about what you got, bought yourself, and would honestly recommend is a great balance. And one of many reasons I continue trusting what you put on your blog.

I also really love this serum. I have reactive skin that loves to *react* and this doesn’t cause any sensitivity or breakouts. I don’t have a ton of brown/pigment to begin with, but it’s definitely helped brighten and keep it at bay.

Also, thanks for being so open about gifts. Not surprised that you are, but it’s so refreshing!

Abra or readers – what are your thoughts on Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair serum? It’s certainly pricy, but benchmark-wise, it’s good for comparison purposes. Some folks consider it OG/HG and chase it on deals. But if this is way better, that would be cheaper and easier!

I haven’t used it in 10+ years, so I’m not sure I could comment. I remember liking it, but not thinking it was the best pick. But my ski was very different then.

Does this help with wrinkles at all? In the market for a new serum. And don’t wanna do botox 🙁

  5. Alyssa says:

Your integrity and honesty about product reviews is one very important factor in my coming back to your blog again and again and again since the late aughts. Thank you, Abra!

  6. Nancy M says:

thank you for this! I’m going to try it.

Yes, why does makeup not stay on anymore? Not helpful when you’ve developed a very light makeup habit to begin with.
