Everything is Perimenopause

Sep 25, 2025

I’m a 43-year-old toddler Mom with a full-time lawyering job, a house to keep, a blog to write, and a to-do list a mile long. I’m tired. I’ve gained weight. My hair is falling out. I’m not sleeping well. And according to the Internet: Everything is Perimenopause.

But while all that ails me may or may not be the early days of the dreaded Change, the changes to my skin likely are peri related. Here’s how I’ve changed up the products I’m using to help address my new skincare and beauty needs.

My Hands // Wrinkles are an inevitable, though unwelcome, part of aging. To keep my hands looking as young as possible, while combatting the dry skin that has afflicted me thanks to perimenopause, I do a few things differently.

  1. I apply my skincare products to the back of my hands. Just whatever is left after face application gets rubbed onto my hands.
  2. I use Soft Services Theraplush hand creme every night before bed. It’s lush and moisturizing and feels luxurious.
  3. I use Essie Apricot Oil on my cuticles to keep them from splitting. Yes, I still LOVE the Dior Creme Abricot, but in this economy, sometimes expenses need to be cut.

My Body // I apply lotion after my shower, and I swear, by noon, my calves feel like the sands of the Kalahari. What is this?! I don’t know, but this Versed body lotion that I randomly snapped up at Target one day seems to help. Also, for emergency dryness (like when you wear wool pants on a hot day), I keep this Aquaphor stick in my purse.

Has anyone else noticed a smell? Harvard says body odor can change during perimenopause, and it just feels insulting that this is happening, but here we are. I’ve started using Dial soap under my arms and switched my antiperspirant.

My Face // Nora Ephron was right. I do feel bad about my neck. Luckily, this Ordinary serum seems to be helping. A little. I also bought this red light collar from The Light Salon, which seems to be helping more. It’s not the most comfy thing to wear, but I can use it on multiple parts of my face.

As for the skin laxity that has led my cheeks to sag to a point where I can throw them over my shoulder like a regimental soldier, I started using the ZIIP Halo. It’s a micro current device that Cheryl of If It’s Tuesday convinced me to buy after seeing her results. I confess, I don’t use it enough. (I have a toddler, and sometimes, I just want to go to bed.) But I do see a difference if I do use it. My skin sags a little less, my skincare penetrates more deeply, and things just seem tighter, especially around the jawline.

I also changed my face wash. And, even though it’s been years, I still sing Gleanser’s praises like we fell in love yesterday.

Lastly, let’s talk about serums. Between purchases and gifting, I’ve tried more than two-dozen new serums this year. Most went in the trash. This Mother Science Hero Serum went in the cart. Twice. It’s a great serum if you just want to use one, instead of having a whole routine.

My Hair // Dry. It’s dry. Luckily, my Commence shampoo is keeping it looking nice. And my Aveda spray is giving it a boost. But the real issue is hair growth. There’s very little happening on my head, and a lot happening on my chin.

A popular hair supplement company offered me a sizable sum if I would promote their product. I said, no. I don’t promote health supplements of any kind. The supplement industry is an unregulated wasteland and I made a mistake years ago promoting a vitamin without being a doctor (ask me about commercial liability insurance policies instead). I’d rather just take a multi-vitamin and hope for the best.

As for that chin hair, I just tweeze. I like a precision tweezer with a really sharp point. Though I may start waxing at home. And I know, I see the comments, hair removal is life changing. Maybe next year.

So what are you doing to help combat physical changes related to perimenopause? Leave your favorite products and ideas in the comments.

Had to completely change my skincare and makeup regime in the last two years. A big thank you to Abra for your recs for Merit and Prequel products.

  2. MMC says:

HRT during perimenopause was life changing for me. I was able to sleep again, I felt more like myself. It didn’t help with hair and skin but with everything else.

  3. Jess says:

I bought the next size pants up. It took me a long time because of my ego. But I’ve moved on.

I also came across the following quote that I have decided to make my perimenopause mantra:

“F**k aging gracefully, I’m disgracefully aging”

It fits my current state of mind that took years to get to, which is I really don’t care what anyone else thinks. I am in charge of me, no one else. And like the poet Mary Oliver said, “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

    Welcome to the club?

Do get your thyroid hormones checked, along with other blood panel tests. Treating my hashimoto’s (autoimmune hypothyroidism) is slowly improving my hair loss. Addressing my anemia helped with a bunch of things, too. And talk to your doctor(s) about MHT and whether or not you are a candidate, or if there are other options to consider.

As for the changes in body odor, I am a fervent believer in hypochlorous acid. The NYT has a good article on what it is (not just influencer hype). In addition to clearing up some white heads on my face and chest, I have found spraying it on my sternum, under the bra band, and occasionally the arm pits has helped reduce, possibly eliminate, a certain funk I had developed any time I would sweat (which is a lot!). I like the one Prequel makes. The travel size lasts me a few months at least.

And as a parent of a little, sleep is so limited, so do everything you can to make the most of the hours you do get. SleepDocShelby on insta is a great one to follow.

Last piece of advice from someone older than you: don’t be a martyr; ask for and accept help.

I am not at that stage yet, but I do have a humble drugstore alternative to Creme Abricot.

I prefer creams to oils for cuticles, and I’ve been using this Sally Hansen Cuticle Cream for 20 years. It is really nice for being so afforable (on sale for under $5 at Ulta right now): https://www.ulta.com/p/cuticle-massage-cream-xlsImpprod17821173?sku=2523200

I did order Creme Abricot on your recommendation to try as an accomplishment treat for myself – and while I like it, I can’t see myself repurchasing at that price point when I can get this for less than 1/6th of the price.

I’ve never had issues with my nails being brittle or bendy, or my hands being dry, my whole life until now. So far I’ve been using OPI nail envy on my nails themselves, keeping them very short, and using la roche posay cicaplast balm on my hands. Any recommendations for hand cream’s that are unscented, non greasy but deeply hydrating would be great! I like the LRP but I can only use it at night because it’s pretty sticky.

    • Linda says:

I also hate the greasy feeling of hand creme.. I have a non scented hand creme from Aldi (their own Lacura brand) and it absorbs well. Rituals hand crèmes are also very good and absorb well but not sure if they make an unscented one.

The hair shedding is my biggest problem right now so welcome any tips!

    • katel says:

Try la roche cicaplast mains (hands) – what you love about baume with quicker absorption.

  7. Emily K says:

I’ve actually simplified my skincare routine quite a bit and I’ve been very pleased. I apply tretinoin 0.25% on my face nightly and I’ve started using on the backs of my hands too — makes a difference! Either Timeless or Prequel Vitamin C in the morning and I moisturize with Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream Ultimate (discovered initially for my kids’ eczema and honestly works just as well or better than any other high end moisturizer I’ve ever tried, including on my face). Plus Botox!

  8. A says:

+1 for HRT! No one talks about how these hormones impact your sleep and/or brain functioning. Also, for skincare, recommend putting sunscreen on the backs of your hands, especially if you drive a lot.

  9. Sarah Schimmel says:

I’ve been on an estrogen patch and 200mg of progesterone for 5 months once the night sweats were getting out of control. I swear it has also helped my skin feel smoother and brighter.
I’ve upped my water intake. It’s annoying.
Prequel Vitamin C serum daily and Tretnoin with a GOOD moisturizer 3-4x a week.
    I use Versed’s Micro-exfoliator 2x a week
Naturium’s BioLipid lotion has kept my skin sane after 2 years of living in very dry Denver.
I started getting pimples UNDER MY ARMS – so after I shower, I use Thayer’s Toning Pads – seems to have helped (bonus, can also be used to help prevent bikini bumps).

    THIS IS ALL DEEPLY UNFAIR.

  10. Crockett says:

At 10 years older than you and someone with dry skin, my total game changer was applying a few pumps of almond oil to my wet skin before getting out of the shower. Then I lightly towel off. That’s it. A pump bottle on Amazon is like $12-14. It’s one of my only auto ship items. Transformed my dry skin to soft and supple – no lotions added post shower anymore!

  11. Liz says:

Collagen for hair. I have been taking collagen powder for about 3 months and my hair has never looked better. Thicker, tons of body (apparently I have curly hair now….did not know that but thanks, hormones) and not as dry.

It’s supposed to help with skin elasticity, etc, but I haven’t really seen any changes there. But for the hair, so worth it.

  12. Kris says:

I would just like to add to the chorus of hormone replacement therapy proponents. I do love my estradiol patch, and of course, some progesterone makes it even better. My hair is thick. My skin is smooth. I do not have a mustache and I’m 57 next week. Also, after an initial water weight gain when I first started taking it several years ago, I have managed to keep my weight in the OK zone. Never optimal, but acceptable. Love you, and I ordered some of that serum.

  13. Kim says:

L’Occitane shower oil. It has been getting me through winter for the last 5 years. Game changer. Used sparingly, a bottle lasts a really long time.

    • Erin says:

I vote for oral minoxidil for hair loss. If you get a prescription for it from your primary doctor, it’s about $5 for a 3 month supply. Be warned. ALL the hair grows in thicker…. took some new grooming skills for me to adjust to that, but it is SO worth it for my head hair!

And I have also started birth control pills for the first time in 10 years (I’m 45). This definitely helps with sleep.

  14. Elizabeth says:

I noticed my body odor changing and googled it. The results “yes during perimenopause body odor can change and become more noticeable” AND “women may become more sensitive to smells like body odor during perimenopause”. 🤣🤨🤓

  15. D says:

I tweeze and use the tinkle razor. 46. Everything is peri.

  16. c-p says:

Everything is peri and thank the maker for the ubiquity of it right now. As I definitively enter this unwanted chapter of life, I am so grateful to see it discussed on social media and the internet generally. I cannot imagine going through this privately and wondering what the hell was happening to me.

It sort of makes me feel sad for my mom and my grandma, that they maybe suffered silently because no one was talking about it, especially not in your 40s. At least there is a sense of normalization on the topic and discussions about real solutions.

I’m in line for HRT because I am not dealing with the brain fog and daily wake-ups at 3:00am for another ten years.

And yes been using Dial for my armpits because nothing else touches the odor! Lume deodorant is the other thing that’s saving me from Pepé Le Pew status.

For face lotion, I use IT Cosmetics Confidence in a Cream anti-aging moisturizer. It’s the only moisturizer that I have ever found that keeps me feeling like my face isn’t sandpaper.

I love the idea of using sunscreen on your hands! Starting tomorrow I’m going to start applying before the conmute home in the afternoon.

  17. Kate says:

My dermatologist prescribes Minoxodil pills for hair loss and thinning, and they do help!
