Ask the Editor: A Short Q & A

Aug 13, 2025

Almost every day, I have to clear my DMs of all the short questions that I get from readers of this blog. Most consist of “Hey, what was that thing you mentioned a few weeks ago that I thought I bookmarked but can’t find?” Or “I have this issue, what helps?” So I thought I would pull some recent DMs to share here for those who might also have the same questions.

Who makes those leather pouches?

I keep these Cuyana leather pouches in my work bag to organize small items. They wear like iron, been knocked around for 5+ years and still look new. Make a great gift.

Coffee order?

Caramel Macchiato, non-fat milk.

What shoes are NEW for fall? My shoes look OLD.

If you’re updating your shoe wardrobe for fall you want two shoes: a modern Mary Jane and a suede, low-profile sneakers.

A Modern Mary Jane // What makes a Mary Jane modern is the updated shape. No cutesy, Parisian-inspired styles. Instead, check out these Boden Mary Janes or these Everlane Mary Janes in leather or satin.

Prefer a traditional style but want one that looks more mature? These Birdies flats are it. The almond toe and the more sophisticated colors update the shoe.

Suede Sneakers // For fall, the must-have hue for sneakers is a warm brown — think dark tan, toffee, or cocoa colors. These Sam Edelman sneakers are a popular option. Veronica Beard has a really unique choice with contrast laces. And these Dolce Vita Serinas are fab.

Are you still taking Gruns?

I am, mostly for the benefits I see with my regularity. But Gruns gummy vitamins are so expensive and I’ve never adjusted to paying the price for them. Plus, I don’t like the sweet, grassy flavor. So I’m probably going to switch to these vitamins.

Which eye cream did you buy for Kyle?

My husband turned 40 this year and he mentioned I got him eye cream for his birthday. It was both a joke and a useful gift. This Korres Wide Awake roller was the product I gave him because it’s easy to use and very effective and helping him look more alive for early morning meetings.

How do you keep Sloane occupied at a restaurant?

Screen time is a very touchy subject for Moms, and to each their own, but when we’re in a restaurant we start off with toys or books and then, when her food comes, she can watch a show (usually Bluey or Dino Ranchers). Mom and Dad get to eat in peace and it’s a very effective bribe. The toys that work best at holding her attention are these Mini Magna-Tiles, magnet figures, and these reusable puffy sticker books.

Favorite purchase this summer?

I almost fainted when this Monica Vinader ring arrived. It’s stunning in the aquamarine.

What kind of hot rollers do you use?

These Conair ones. I stockpile them in my garage so I never have to switch brands. I’ll be 80 and still have sets in storage.

Are you still using your Stanley?

Yes, I still drink water from my Stanley cups, but I downgraded to the 30oz version. 40oz just started to feel comically large. I’m also adding these crystallized lime packets to my water to help me drink more. True Citrus is just citric acid, citrus juice and citrus oil. No sweetener, no artificial ingredients, just citrus flavor.

Books on your nightstand?

The Friday Afternoon Club, Everyone Is Lying to You, The Women of Arlington Hall, Over Ruled: The Human Toll of Too Much Law, and a Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.

I love the True Citrus. I use the lemon & the lime together, and it’s a nice combo.

I want to try the grapefruit one though. I think I’d like that too!
