I typed the title of this post and died a little inside. Can I really be thinking about fall fashion already? Yes, ladies, once the Anniversary Sale comes, it’s time to shift your purchasing to fit into one of two categories:
- Deeply discounted styles that will still be in play next summer (more on this later).
- Pieces that you can layer up for winter or wear in fall.
So let’s start with some fall transition pieces, beginning with the open work sweater.

I own this Varley Kershaw sweater in two colors — black and egret. It’s worth every penny of its $120 cost. I layer it over t-shirt dresses when my office is cold. I wear it over tank tops with shorts. I pack it for every summer trip. And then, when fall comes it’s the sweater that’s warm enough in the mornings and not to hot in the afternoons. It’s a marvel.
The sizing for this top is slouchy. I take a small, and I should be a medium, and even that’s got a relaxed look to it. So I recommend sizing down unless you have a larger bust, in which case, it may be TTS for you.
I love this sweater. If you want something with short sleeves or need a v-neck style, this Callie knit top is a wonderful choice. It’s so chic over a swimsuit top with shorts.

Great advice! And I need to just buckle down and start buying Varley sweaters instead of Banana Republic Factory sweaters that only look good for a season.
