Nearly four months ago, I walked out of my daily life to work the legislative session in Olympia, Washington. I came home on the weekends, but the vagaries of life — getting Sloane ready for school, handling endless laundry, feeding the dog, etc. — all stopped for me. Readjusting to this old/new scheduled is a challenge.
The mental labor. Holy f**k.
Sitting in a CLE about appellate procedure while ordering new leotards for gymnastics on my phone because you forgot it starts tomorrow. Making a grocery list based on what’s left in the fridge while listening a Zoom presentation about FAFSA completion rates. Starting laundry in between meetings. Forgetting the laundry, realizing it smells, starting it again. Writing e-mails in the parking lot before pre-school pickup. Remembering that the dog is out of food only because you got stuck at a light in front of the Petco. Finding out that ballet pictures are Saturday at the same time as the church Easter Egg hunt, because of course they are.
I missed Sloane. I did not, at all, even a little bit, miss this.
