Work Wednesday: A Printed Dress

Jan 28, 2026

I was lying to myself.

I thought I could make it through the entire session wearing pants suit. At 43, I thought I had matured, grown, evolved into a wearer of pants suits. But I was wrong.

I am uncomfortable. I am tired of being pinched. I am tired of my pants fitting one way at 8:00 AM and a completely different way at 3:30 PM. I have had enough.

Three weeks in, I find myself shopping every day for dresses that I can wear under blazers. Here is an example of what I’m talking about.

A cool blazer is a must have.  This Veronica Beard one is at the top of my list.  It’s a “cool girl” jacket that you can wear for years to come.  For something under-$150, Express has a nice option.  I also like this ALC rental option from RTR.

This Farm Rio dress has a bold print, but don’t be afraid of it.  The jacket tones it down a bit, and the muted color palette makes it wearable for work.  I adore it.  It makes a statement without being loud.  If you want a subtle print, Quince has a wrap dress you should check out.

You know I hate a flimsy belt.  So I almost always replace the sash belts on dresses with something with more structure.  This J. McLaughlin Belt has a bit of stretch, and is still incredibly chic.

    Love this!

Best blazer ever! worth every penny no matter the color button combination. sometimes you can find them on sale.

Can you talk more about how to wear that blazer over that dress? I would have thought there was too much going on to do both, especially with the pockets on the chest. (Totally love that belt though).

  4. H. says:

Where did you get the belt? I’m not seeing it on their website. Thanks!

Perhaps it’s a body shape thing (torso length, hip-to-waist ratio?), but I can’t get through a work day with a structured belt. I feel like it’s crushing my insides and strangely gives me a backache. I love the look, so I’m a little jealous. Maybe the stretch of this belt would work for me? Am I missing the link to it?

In my 40s this is why 90% of my work wardrobe is dresses. I stalk the Fold and a ton of their workwear is washable and totally worth it on sale.

THIS. So glad I’m not the only one.

That Farm Rio dress is on super sale on the Farm Rio website! It’s final sale, but worth the discount if you’re really interested.

Love this dress. Bought it on the spot. Your description about pants fitting differently by the end of the day was spot on and made me laugh. Any other dress suggestions like this with a blazer it would be much appreciated!!

  10. Amy says:

The Quince version of the blazer is a solid dupe also. And they have zip in hoods!

  11. HB says:

Agreed on how pants throughout the day, but I also feel that way about the tights I wear under dresses. What do you wear that feels comfortable all day?

    • LM says:

I am a little embarrassed to make this suggestion, but hear me out — maternity tights. The first cold snap of the season, I hadn’t got around to buying new tights and the only ones i could find were maternity tights so i threw them on. So comfortable and they are so stretchy that it doesn’t make any difference to the fit of your clothes…
