The Jumble: September 8, 2025

Sep 8, 2025

I have been tariff’ed.

Last week, I posted to Instagram the story of my first experience with the end of the de minimus exemption and the Trump tariffs. For those who don’t follow me on that platform, let’s recap.

On Thursday, UPS left me a door slip stating that I owed $52 COD for a package delivery. I called UPS to ask what package the charge was related to, and was informed that they couldn’t give me any information about the sender or the shipment, except that it was coming from Crawley, Great Britain. The customer service rep then told me that the fee was a tariff related charge and that I could pay it through the app.

So I downloaded the UPS app and uploaded the number from the door slip. The actual charge turned out to be $42.10, which I paid believing that the fee was attached to $260 dress and shirt that I ordered from Boden (a UK retailer) the prior week.

It was not.

Instead, the next day, when UPS delivered my package, the contents turned out to be a $29 mascara that was sent to me as a PR package from a UK makeup brand. Ashley Spivey was charged $53 for the same mascara.

Now, the UK tariff rate is 10%, so why wasn’t the fee $2.90? I have no idea because there’s zero transparency attached to these fees. It appears that UPS is charging handling and brokerage fees for tariff’ed items with no explanation for why the total amount is the total amount. And a trade attorney messaged me through Instagram and said that even if the package came from the UK, the mascara might have been made in a different country with a higher rate, which would have changed the calculation. Other shoppers are reporting similarly stupid fees, like author Susan Orlean who was asked to pay over $2,000 for a delivery from SSENSE.

Regardless, I just paid 145% the cost of the mascara to have it delivered to my home, and because I wasn’t told what was being delivered, I couldn’t decline prior. As a result, I immediately had myself removed from all gifting lists and PR lists. Because, since I owe income tax on every freebie per IRS rules, I will end up paying UPS and the government $52 for a mascara that was “free.”

For more information on how tariffs work, NPR has an explainer. Also, I checked with Boden via their customer service line and all tariffs were rolled into per item price increases, so if you order from that retailer, the tariff was already added to the price.

Lastly, if you think buying from US-based retailers will save you from the vagaries of tariffs, pricing, and costs, think again. “Dynamic pricing” is now being rolled out at Wal-Mart, Target and other retailers. Essentially, the price tags are being removed from individual items so that the store can change the cost of the item on a whim. So if one store sells out of toilet paper, the prices at the other stores can go up. Retailers are also charging different prices to different shoppers as determined by the AI-controlled algorithm.

    I hate this timeline.

Self inflicted wounds to our country. And our economy is going to continue to pay the price. Hate the times we’re living in now.

Thank you for looking into this, beyond terrible that companies are taking advantage.

Beware, QVC automatically defaulted to their “easy pay” with payments spread over three months. I almost didn’t notice and had to actively click through to a separate area during checkout and manually uncheck “easy pay” for each item and then return to the cart to complete the purchase.

Thank you for explaining the Boden thing. I have multiple items coming from them and had not seen a tariff charge yet. I would be hard-pressed to not order from Boden: I like their clothes so much.

I have had the silliest experiences with DHL. I ordered two separate packages from an Australian retailer. Their clothing is made in China or Indonesia. I placed a big order (~300$) in early August, before the de minimus period ended, and was charged $200 in tariffs at checkout. I thought everything was good until DHL said I owed them an additional $280. My retailer is still trying to prove to DHL that additional duties are not required on my 1st package, which contains clothing made in China. DHL sends me threatening messages every week but doesn’t actually seem to follow through with sending the package back to AUS. In late August, after de minimus period ended, I ordered a single dress made in Indonesia from the same retailer. Yes, I’m a gambler. I was interested to see how a different country of origin impacted shipping from the same retailer. I did NOT pay duties at checkout but the retailer emailed me saying they had no idea what I would be required to pay and do I still want the dress. I responded yes, and received the parcel (~100$) after paying an additional $40 in duties. DHL will not call me back regarding the first package, and it’s still sitting somewhere at DCA. I refuse to pay the $280 so I guess I’m in a game of chicken with DHL. What a story to tell my kids! /s

I am wondering what brand mascara? I just ordered the eyelash serum from Sweed which I believe is UK, it still hasn’t shipped even though it has been 2 weeks and now I wonder if I will get charged whenever it finally arrives. Such a bummer

I have a Dosey pill case, the oval 7-day one, and I really like it! Definitely prettier and more luxe than the plastic “nice” one I bought from Nordstrom last year, with plastic lids where the days of the week were starting to wear off. I only wish it had AM/PM dividers because I take a few small pills twice a day, so I’d love a divided compartment that’s still the same size overall.

I had the same absurd experience with antique ceramics bought at auction in the UK over the summer. Previously, items over 100 years old were exempt from tariffs, because the potter who died 200+ years ago isn’t exactly taking anyone’s job… Despite the certificate from the auction house, I was charged the 10% on the value of the item, plus the buyer’s premium, which is a service performed in the UK on which I had already paid VAT (it’s a fee to cover the cost of the auction house to catalog the lots, run the auctions, etc.) and over $100 in processing fees from both DHL and CBP… It feels like a haphazard process design to extort money

Another really great grill brush, to replace the wire bristles is the scrub daddy steam one. It’s truly amazing. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Scrub-Daddy-BBQ-Daddy-Grill-Brush-Bristle-Free-Steam-Cleaning-Scrubber-810044131147/325797401
