My Actual Skincare Routine

Aug 14, 2025

Last year, I was on a panel discussion about influencing when the moderator asked the panelists about our most successful TikTok video. Obviously, I’m not on TikTok. So when it came my time to answer, I explained that I refuse to engage in what Grace Atwood calls The Instagram Olympics, the thankless business of chasing an algorithm that rewards video content today, photo carousels set to music tomorrow, and ventriloquism with an AI-generated puppet the day after that. But the other reason that I’m not on TikTok is simpler for women my age to understand.

I am not on TikTok because I will not spend one more minute of my life watching 19-year olds with mild under eye darkness sell me miracle creams that don’t do s**t. I will not give one view to a click-seeking creator who applies 10+ skincare products to her face every night destroying her skin barrier. And I will not watch one more 27-year-old try to sell me wrinkle cream as if they have any idea what a real wrinkle looks like.

Yes, I made some mistakes in my late-20s not understanding that some recommendations are best left to the women who struggle with those issues. Yes, I once had a lengthy nighttime skincare routine (because I had inordinate amounts of free time and didn’t spend all of my spare cash on blackberries and Play-Doh). But I have learned from those mistakes. Because no one should buy wrinkle cream from a brand that was dumb enough to hire a woman under-35 as their ambassador. (I don’t care which night cream Selena Gomez uses, telling me what Pam Anderson buys!)

Because I’ve learned these lessons as a woman of 43, with a job and a toddler here is my actual skincare routine, complete with affordable dupes where necessary.

Face Wash // I only buy Prequel Gleanser. On the rare occasion that I’m forced to use something else, I notice immediately how dry and lifeless my skin looks. Also available at Target.

Morning Serum // Before I was using Prequel Vitamin-C serum and a separate Niacinamide serum to reduce acne. While I liked both serums, I wanted one stop shopping and switched to the Mutha No. 1 Serum after using a sample size for a couple of weeks. It costs more than my prior serums, but I’ve found that my skin tolerates it better, as sometimes the Vitamin-C would increase the redness on my face.

Moisturizer // I have combination skin, so I love a gel moisturizer. Farmacy makes my favorite one. If I’m in a pinch and need something that I can buy at Target, I pick up this one from e.l.f.

Night Serum and Eye Cream // At night, I keep it very simple. I’m looking for products that diminish wrinkles and boost moisture without turning my face into an oil slick. This Korres serum is my current favorite. I’ve been using it for three weeks and my skin is noticeably smoother in between exfoliation sessions. I also apply eye cream at night, and this one from Fresh is a longtime favorite.

Masks // I use this Dr. Jart sheet mask to clear up breakouts in a flash. And while, in the past, I was gatekeeping the name of my must-have anti-aging mask like a Roman sentry, I’ve decided to stop. I buy my Innisfree Black Tea sheet masks from Amore Mall. They’re the greatest masks, so hydrating and brightening. You look like you just got back from vacation. Just be advised, customs can seize your order. I’ve only had one of a dozen or so seized, but it does happen.

SPF // Speaking of having things seized, my last order of European sunscreen was snatched by customs. I just ordered a fresh shipment of La Roche Pose from The French Pharmacy and paid the atrocious customs fee, so here’s hoping it arrives. The American-manufactured LRP products are good too, but this article explains why they’re not as good as their European counterparts.

Also, you may notice that I stopped using UltraViolette for SPF, that’s because I got a shipment of fraudulent products from a well-known and respected U.S. based retailer and until that gets sorted out, I’m done. Nothing like opening a box to see that your product had clearly been opened and resealed.

So what skincare are you using and loving right now? Or did you try something that got the thumbs down? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

    Amen to your opening paragraphs!!!

  2. JP says:

I have dry skin. I use mayo pure cleansing oil for makeup removal. For moisturizer, I like the Charlotte Tilbury magic cream. When I am going to have a meeting or go into an office, I use skin better retinol pads at night. I also occasionally use the La roche posay vitamin c serum. For sunscreen, I use Biore aqua Rich moisturizing sunscreen daily. And that’s it.

  3. Nat says:

You should not use niacinamide and vitamin c solution close to each other in the same routine. The combination creates ricin, which is a toxin and increases irritation to your face!

  4. Tiffany says:

I’ve been trying to do tretinoin for the last year. I’ve never gotten the middle of my face to tolerate it, so I’m trying to do a retrinal (recommended by a dermatologist on TikTok but she looks legit outside of TikTok). I do lots of other crap too, but nothing seems to be life-changing. I can’t decide I’m avoiding my skin worsening or if there’s some life-changing product out there I just haven’t figured out.

  5. Jen B says:

You mention exfoliating, would you share your current exfoliator? I feel like as my skin ages it’s becoming harder to hit the sweet spot of exfoliation that ‘does’ something, without irritating my face.

  6. Liz says:

This is great, thank you so much for sharing! I always trust your recommendations, and made note of several of your suggestions for next time I run out of things.

Personally I’m guilty of trying and using way too many products because it sparks joy, I know my skin and don’t do anything stupid that actually irritates my skin, and why not, it’s not the worst vice to have.

But Kiehl’s Vitamin C serum with hyaluronic acid has been one of my few consistent go-tos. It goes on so smoothly and gives my oily skin nice hydration without breaking me out. The Dennis Gross Roth daily peels are fantastic and always clear my skin up and make it as smooth as a baby’s bottom. I use them maybe once a week max given both their strength and cost. The Drunk Elephant peptide cream is my go-to night cream – nice and hydrating without breaking me out, and I really do notice a difference in firmness when I use it consistently versus sporadically.

    • Kelly says:

I kind of can’t believe they call the Dennis Gross peel pads “daily”, it was WAY too much for my skin. I stick to once a weekish.

  7. Eliza says:

I truly owe you my firstborn child for introducing me to the Prequel Gleanser.

  8. Rachel says:

THANK YOU. Your honesty and no-nonsense approach is why I keep reading your blog, even after quitting IG/TT.

  9. chrissy says:

As always, appreciate your honesty!! I’ll be following along to see what others also have to share. I spent a few years in my late 30s going down the rabbit hole of products and I’m convinced it is the reason I have fairly sensitive skin today that is *much* more reactive to the sun regardless of SPF.

I am a convert to Prequel’s Gleanser. I have been using their Vitamin C but recently ran out. Now I’m rethinking if I should buy it again…

Can you please say a little bit more about these two points? I would like to understand what happened. Thanks.

“my last order of European sunscreen was snatched by customs.”

“I got a shipment of fraudulent products from a well-known and respected U.S. based retailer . . . opening a box to see that your product had clearly been opened and resealed.”

  11. Rachel C says:

Love this entire post!! I have very dry, sensitive skin, though I was blessed with good genes and a mom that preached “clean & moisturize” from a young age.

My current routine: Fresh Soy cleanser, Fresh Kombucha Essence, Josie Maran Milk, Outset Prep Serum, Skinfix Moisturizer and the Tula SPF. It’s kept my skin plump and hydrated for the past 2 years, and I’ll cry when something either gets discontinued or my skin shifts again.

  12. Beth says:

Top 5 products that I use daily and will buy in bulk if there’s even a hint of their disappearance:
    1. La Roche Posay Cleansing Oil
    2. Hypochlorous Acid Spray (Magic Molecule or Prequel)
    3. Merit Great Skin Serum
    4. Biossance Omega Repair Cream
    5. La Roche Posay Cicaplast Balm B5

  13. Amanda says:

I wholeheartedly agree on Gleanser for cleansing and I also like their oil-cleanser for double cleansing, which I need. BUT! For travel and just to have around as well, the Cerave cleansing BALM is amazing and top-notch. I also use the Prequel Vitamin C in the morning and Trader Joe’s retinol at night. And, most important—Supergoop Unseen sunscreen everyday! It’s a primer, it’s sun protection, it’s my can’t live without. It works, the rewards are great and also…IT’S COVERED BY HSA/FSA! GO GET IT.

Perfectly worded! TikTok is not for me, either.

  16. Anon, London says:

Howled with LAUGHTER at your opening statement lol
BUT BUT please there are some AMAZING non-teenagers on TikTok who share AMAZING makeup, skincare and hair care content. NO NONE OF THEM ARE TEENS OR IN THEIR 20’s THANKFULLY.
But some of them also re-share their TikTok content on their Instagram, so you might not have to download TikTok and sell your sole to the Chinese (!)
And I actually find TikTok algorithm BETTER than Instagram, as I only need to engage once or twice with content I enjoy AND my FYP feed will be updated very very quickly with similar content from new content creators posting similar content.
Some Kick arse TikTok beauty content creators who are not teenagers:
    Abbey Yung
    Kat James
    Erica Taylor
Vincent Ford (used to be a makeup artist for NARS)
    Lipstick Lesbians
Sure I could think of more, but the above will get your TikTok algorithm on the right track for discovering more non-teenage beauty content creators

  17. Katel says:

I make one exception to your opening point on skincare advice from women young enough to be my daughter. hydrationceo has sensitive acne prone skin – I’ve gotten a few product recommendations from her that I like

    – cocokind electrolyte water cream. Great affordable gel moisturizer
    – Kiehl’s truly targeted acne solution. Dries down clear and acts like a pimple patch without the bulk

things that caught my eye
